Lineage

Moria → Umoria → Angband → Oangband → FAangband. Nick McConnell announced FAangband 0.1.0 on 28 November 2005 as a variant of Oangband 0.7.0 (Leon Marrick, Bahman Rabii), reworked to put the player in Tolkien’s Silmarillion late in the First Age: new races, a wilderness with towns and several dungeons, and nothing from later ages. The 0.x and 1.x line ran until 1.4.4 (around 2014); 0.3.6 (February 2009) was put together by Si Griffin.

In 2020 development restarted as a rewrite: FAangband 2 re-implements the best of 1.4.4 on the current Angband code base (4.2), so its code now descends from vanilla Angband rather than Oangband. 2.0.0 came out on 22 August 2021, 2.0.1 on 30 September 2021; this port is built from upstream’s main branch after 2.0.1.

Manual

The full manual (the Sphinx source docs/*.rst: quick demo, guide, FAQ, birth, the world, attacking, playing, commands, options, customising, version history, licence, credits) plus the in-game help (?, lib/help/) is here: manual; the rendered version is at faangband.readthedocs.io. Also the changelog (changes.txt, which starts at 2.0, plus the GitHub release notes; the 0.x/1.x diffs were on angband.oook.cz) and the licence (GPL 2 or the Angband licence).

Getting started

  1. Open the game and pick a world: Angband Dungeon plays like classic Angband, Standard Wilderness is the real FAangband.
  2. Make a character: a Longbeard or Adan Warrior is sturdy; keep the start kit.
  3. Buy Cure Light Wounds potions, Phase Door scrolls and flasks of oil in your home town.
  4. Head out: > walks to the nearest stair or path, p explores for you in dungeons, Enter lists every command, i and e open item menus.
  5. Read the game’s help page for keys and saving.

Help

We found no walkthrough: the levels are random. The goal is to kill Morgoth on level 100 of Angband. Rules of thumb:

Cheats

All in this build, as in Angband 4.2; each one marks the character in the score list.
