Lineage

Angband → Zangband → XAngband (Japanese) → TinyAngband. The history file says it plainly: “first version, made from XAngband 1.3.0” (in Japanese). iks took XAngband and cut it down to a game you can win in an evening. See the family tree.

Getting started

Open the game, pick a race and class (Warrior is easiest).
Go to the General Store (1) and buy a lantern.
Take the stairs down and keep diving.

Help

No walkthrough exists, and the game is short enough not to need one. The help includes the Zangband newbie guide (tang.txt). Tips:

Quest monsters wait on floors 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25.
Kill Sauron on 26 to open the stairs to 27.
After winning, retire with Q y @.

Cheats

The Zangband wizard commands remain: Ctrl+W for wizard mode, Ctrl+A for debug commands. Both mark the character as a cheater. (command.txt; not tried here)
