Today's NetHack: the DevTeam's current version of the 1987 classic, with its own tiles, in four windows.

NetHack 5.0 (the NetHack DevTeam, 2026) is the current NetHack, grown from 1.3d over almost forty years. Thirteen roles and five races, the Gnomish Mines, Sokoban, Minetown, the Quest, Gehennom and the Elemental Planes stand between you and the goal: bring the Amulet of Yendor up to the Astral Plane and offer it to your god. Death is permanent.

About the game

NetHack keeps every level you leave, has no town and no shops to return to, and most items are unidentified until you use them. The dungeon has branches: the Gnomish Mines, Sokoban, the Quest for your role. Almost everything interacts: dip, rub, kick, pray, eat what you kill.

Tips

New player's guide

Your first steps

  1. Type a name, then answer n to "Shall I pick…?" to choose role, race and alignment (a human Valkyrie is easiest).
  2. Look at your gear in the Inventory window, or with i.
  3. Explore with ~, with your pet following. Walk into monsters to fight, pick things up with ,.
  4. Search dead ends (s), then press > to walk to the stairs and go down.
  5. Save with S; start again with the same name to continue.
