Avanor, the Land of Mystery: an ADOM-like fantasy roguelike of villages, quests and caves.
About the game
Avanor (Vadim Gaidukevich, first released 28 November 2001, last classic version 0.5.8 in 2006) is a fantasy roguelike in the spirit of ADOM: the kingdom of Avanor is cut off by mountains and overrun by monsters, and you are one of its last heroes. You start by a village and a river; talk to people (C) to learn what went wrong and take on quests. There is a wilderness to cross, caves and dungeons below it, skills that grow with use, weapon skills, magic schools, alchemy and gods to pray to. Death is permanent. This is the 0.6.0 revival by Joachim de Groot.

Saving your game
- S saves the game; Q quits. On the web the game also saves quietly before you take stairs down, and every save is kept on reload: choose restore at the title.
- Death is final: the save is deleted.
- In the browser the save and the window layout live in this browser's storage (IndexedDB). File ▾ → Export save / Import save move the save file; New game deletes it. Private windows and "clear site data" delete it too: export first.
Tips
- Chat (C) with everyone in the first village: the quests (q) are the plot.
- Look (l) at unknown letters before walking into them.
- Rest (~) to heal between fights; watch your hunger and eat (E).
- Skills (A) and weapon skills (W) grow with use: stick to one weapon type early.
- Set combat tactics (T) to defensive when a fight goes badly, and run.
New player's guide
Your first steps
- Start a new game: name, race, gender and class. Fighters and barbarians are the easiest start.
- You stand in a field by a village. Walk into the village and chat (C) with the people: they explain the trouble and give you quests (q lists them).
- Check your gear with i (a cursor; Enter shows what you can do with an item) and e (equipment).
- Explore with H; it stops when something hostile comes into view.
- Find stairs and caves; > walks to the nearest known stairs down; press it again there.
Getting stronger
- You gain experience from fights and quests; x shows what the next level needs.
- Skills improve by using them; weapon skills by fighting with that weapon type.
- Spells come from books (r); magic schools level up as you cast (#).
- Mix potions (!) with the alchemy recipes you know (R).
Playing in the browser
- The map is the game's own screen (DawnLike tiles, or text after Tiles in the top bar); status, messages and the other panels are separate windows. A− / A+ on a title bar (shown on hover) change that window's size of text or tiles; Windows shows, hides and rearranges them (drag a title bar or the gap between windows). Menus and pop-ups appear as text boxes over the map.
- Keys: the numeric keypad or the arrow keys move you; keypad 5 waits. H explores, < / > walk to the nearest known stairs (press again there to take them), Enter opens a menu of every command, i shows the pack with a cursor (Enter on an item lists what you can do with it).
- Audio ▾: sound effects made for this port (Avanor has no sound of its own), off by default; the choice is remembered.
- Browsers keep a few shortcuts for themselves (Ctrl+W, Ctrl+T, Ctrl+N, and Cmd shortcuts on a Mac), so those never reach the game.
- If the game ever crashes, a message appears at the top; reload the page to continue from the last save.
About this version
- Based on Avanor 0.6.0 (the revival of Vadim Gaidukevich's 2001 game by Joachim de Groot), upstream commit jaydg/avanor @ 20a0f59, GPL-2.0-or-later. Original authors: Vadim Gaidukevich and Serge Semashko, with many contributors (see the manual's credits, ?). Classic site: avanor.sourceforge.net.
- Tiles: DawnLike by DragonDePlatino, palette by DawnBringer, CC BY 4.0. Sound effects synthesized for this port. Built with Emscripten.
- Our changes (auto-explore, stairs walking, command menu, inventory cursor and item menus, sound, web build) are on GitHub: memmaker/avanor (all changes).
